We basically take carbon filaments and lock them into a polymer resin. The best part? Unlike steel or aluminum, this stuff doesn’t like to deform. As long as you stay within the limits, it holds its ground.
Getting the Fit Right
The 25mm outer diameter is a great sweet spot. It gives you a solid, stable base for your brackets and chassis. But here is the thing: you’ve got to think about the wall thickness. Go thinner and you save weight, but you lose some of that “crush resistance.” If your project involves a lot of bending or heavy compression, you’ll want a thicker wall. Just remember, carbon fiber is rigid. It doesn’t stretch, and it doesn’t give.
How We Make It (And What to Watch For)
We use pultrusion or roll-wrapping to make sure the fibers are lined up perfectly. We mix longitudinal fibers for raw strength with hoop fibers to keep the tube from splitting. It’s what keeps the tube from just snapping when things get bumpy. One heads-up though: carbon fiber conducts electricity. If you’re running wires nearby, please use insulating sleeves. You really don’t want a short circuit on your hands. On the bright side, it handles temperature swings like a pro. Whether your shop is freezing or boiling, the tubes stay the same size.
The Trade-offs
These tubes are absolute beasts in high-vibration setups where metal would eventually just fatigue and fail. But there’s a catch. Carbon fiber is brittle. If you over-tighten a bolt or drop a heavy wrench right on the tube, it won’t just dent. It’ll crack or shatter. And if you’re swapping these into an old frame, make sure your measurements are spot on. Since the material doesn’t flex, you can’t just “force” it into a hole that’s a millimeter too small. Try that, and you’ll likely ruin the wall of the tube.
