If you’ve ever tried to open a modern smartwatch, you know the struggle. You need enough heat to soften the glue, but if you go a tiny bit too far, you’ve just fried the OLED screen or toasted the battery. Standard heat guns are basically sledgehammers. They’re too blunt for this kind of work. That’s why we’re moving toward heating lamps that actually “think” while they work.
Lamps That Know When to Stop
The old way was just turning a dial and hoping for the best. The new approach uses a closed-loop system. Basically, the lamps have sensors built-in that keep an eye on the watch chassis in real-time. The second the adhesive hits that sweet spot where it starts to soften, the system kills the power. No more “heat soak” that kills the internals. It just stops.
The Tech Under the Hood
To get this right, we use shortwave infrared (SWIR) emitters. Instead of just heating up the air around the watch, these focus the energy right into the adhesive layer. We use quartz envelopes and specific filament windings to pack a lot of heat into a tiny space. It ramps up incredibly fast. But there’s a catch. Because it’s so powerful, you can overshoot your target temperature in a heartbeat. To keep things from getting messy, you have to pair these lamps with a fast-acting PID controller. Otherwise, you’re risking a melted casing.
Bringing It Into the Shop
We’ve designed these to be drop-in replacements for those clunky old heat plates. Wiring them is a breeze, though you’ll want to double-check that your power supply can handle the pulsed load from the controller. The best part? The tool tells you when it’s time to start prying. You don’t have to guess if the glue is melted. The system confirms it. It’s a huge relief, and it means way fewer expensive screens ending up in the scrap bin.
